Every year, between 21 and 22 December, winter arrives in the Northern Hemisphere. This astronomical phenomenon, which marks the shortest day of the year, inspired the creation of the festival that celebrates short-format cinema worldwide: The Short Film Day.

In 2024, the Agência – Portuguese Short Film Agency is presenting 5 different programs, for all ages and audiences, with Portuguese and international films, which will be shown from the north to the south of Portugal, on the mainland, and the islands.

To highlight productions made in Portugal, the ‘New Portuguese Short Films’ program includes some narratives that will make you reflect on some problems in today's society. ‘Shorts Films of the World’ presents a selection of international short films competing for the ESFAA 2024/2025 prize (European Short Film Audience Award), while the sections dedicated to the youngest, “Shorts for Everyone” (M/6) and “Friendly Shorts” (M/3), are designed to explore the symbolic universes of animated cinema. This year, the new ‘Best of Curtas’ program reveals the best films that were part of the program of the 32nd Curtas Vila do Conde - International Film Festival.
