A large part of Curtas Metragens CRL' Education Service offer takes place in the Solar - Cinematic Art Gallery, with guided tours, animation workshops, and open-air cinema sessions. Visits can be adapted to each level of education, from pre-school to higher education, by prior appointment.
Program
A filmmaker, activist, woman, and Iranian, Maryam Tafakory is one of the most promising names in contemporary cinema. Working primarily with found footage and often approaching the form of the audiovisual essay, the director seeks to investigate images and what they conceal. It is perhaps important to quote her working method, which critically emphasizes the production of meaning and the creation of both national imaginaries and invented traditions: “In recent years, I have introduced each of my films with a brief request: that the audience pay attention to what cannot be seen, to reflect on why visibility may be overrated. I am trying to distinguish between the acts of seeing and witnessing, while encouraging viewers to read images with critical paranoia, assuming that something is always missing” (Frieze, 250, 2025).
From July 12th to 20th 2025, the 33rd Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival will present a full program dedicated to the director, including a series of screenings combining a partial retrospective of her cinematic work with a Carte Blanche, expanding and interweaving the dialogues and influences suggested by her selections. The program will also feature a guided tour of the exhibition, a performative reading, and an open conversation with the public.

Maryam Tafakory opens her first exhibition in Portugal, “Which pain does film cure?”, at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, on July 12. The exhibition will present a diverse body of work, a selection of already known works and others developed specifically for the exhibition, all imagined by the artist in site-specific devices. Together, they encourage deeper reflection on the contradictions of Iranian society, and above all the place of women and desire.

Curtas Metragens - Cooperativa de Produção Cultural C.R.L. was founded in 1997 and is based in Vila do Conde.
It is active in various projects (Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival, Agência – Portuguese Short Film Agency, Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, Educational Service). It began producing cinematographic works in 2002, namely with the coproduction of four short films, developed as part of the 10th edition of Curtas Vila do Conde.
Educational Service of Curtas Metragens C. R. L. presents itself as a set of actions aimed at school audiences that infers education through the moving image, encouraging new ways of seeing and training students and teachers.
